JWU North Miami Campus COVID-19 Student Confirmed Positive Cases

All JWU students who live on or come to campus are required to conduct daily screening of their symptoms, using an app developed by the university. Based on the response, the student either will be cleared or instructed to notify campus Health Services. Depending on Health Services’ evaluation of the students’ symptoms and other relevant factors, Health Services will determine whether to administer a COVID-19 test is necessary.

The following information is based on student testing coordinated by JWU Health Services:

Important Items to Note for Spring

Access

  1. All students, faculty, and staff must wear their current JWU identification cards. Ideally, on a visible lanyard around the neck.
  2. All JWU identification cards are issued, activated, and managed directly by the Safety & Security office.
  3. Facial masks are required and must be worn on campus at all times.
  4. Additional security posts have been installed both at ASC and UC to provide assistance and guidance.

Bookstore: Mon-Thu: 9am-4pm, Friday: 9am-2pm

Library: Mon-Thu: Noon-3pm (building hours); Mon-Fri: Noon-6pm (virtual hours), Sat/Sun: Closed

Wildcat Center: Mon-Fri: Noon-8pm; closed on weekends

The Mix: Mon-Thu: Lunch: Noon-2 pm; Dinner: 6-8pm

Willie’s Café: Mon-Thu: Breakfast: 6:15am-10am; Fri-Sun: Lunch: 11am–3pm; Dinner: 4-8pm

Counseling Services

Our North Miami campus is offering services via phone or telehealth (video) sessions to students residing anywhere in Florida by appointment only. For students residing outside of Florida, we are offering help with referrals and connection to local providers. If you are interested, please contact the main line 305-892-7075 or email jwunmicounseling@jwu.edu. Our 24/7 on call service Protocall Services is also available after hours at 1-888-222-4805.

 

Parking & Shuttle Services

  1. Designated parking for students has been secured in the Staff and Faculty Parking Lot, the Arch Creek Parking Lot, and the South Parking Lot.
  2. When leaving a parked vehicle on campus, please ensure all valuables are removed from the vehicle.
  3. Shuttle and Saferide services will be available only during evening hours from 5pm to 10pm. However, Saferides are provided from 10pm to 6am upon request, through Campus Safety & Security at 305- 892-7011.
  4. Please report any suspicious activity or individuals to Campus Safety & Security at (305) 892-7011.

 

Residential Life

  1. Attention Arch Creek, Emerald Lake and Palm Gardens residents: Flamingo Hall lobby will be open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in order for you to access your respective mailboxes. 

  2. Please continue to follow all local COVID-19 ordinances implemented in the area, which includes Miami-Dade County-Wide curfew from midnight to 6am every day, until canceled or revised. For the latest information, please visit the county’s Municipalities & Curfews website.

 

COVID-19 Protocols

  1. Staff and students are required to screen themselves for symptoms of COVID-19 on a daily basis. Everyone on campus must wear facial masks at all times.

  2. Both staff and students entering campus property must complete the daily COVID-19 questionnaire via the mobile app, and must present proof of the green check mark upon arrival.

  3. In case the daily COVID-19 mobile app questionnaire yields a red mark:
    • Students must: Notify Faculty and Campus Health Services immediately for assistance.
    • Staff must: Notify immediate supervisor or Department Head.
  1. Faculty and staff are authorized to request from students proof of self-check and green check mark prior to any meeting or scheduled class session.
  1. Students are expected to abide by all federal, state, local, and JWU guidelines and regulations implemented, including the COVID19 Code of Conduct protocol, to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Failure to do so may result in a violation of the Student Code of Conduct and action through the Conduct Review Process.

The implementation of the self-check protocol on the mobile app is part of our universitywide efforts to contain the threat of this highly contagious virus. Once again, thank you for wearing facial coverings, practicing social distancing, and good hygiene. We are all in this together!

What to Expect on the North Miami Campus

The student experience will continue to look different. We continue to monitor federal and state guidance to determine the best way to execute in-person events. This past spring, we successfully offered career fairs and other experiences virtually. Student Academic & Financial Services, Experiential Education & Career Services, Tutoring, Personal Counseling, and other services will be accessible in-person and virtually. Students who typically work on campus should speak with their department heads to determine their status.

Why has the university decided to require the COVID-19 vaccine for students?

After careful consultation with government and public health officials, the university will require that all students be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to their arrival to campus for the 2021 fall semester.

Adding the COVID-19 vaccination to our student immunization requirements will aid our efforts to provide a safer and more robust college experience for our entire JWU community. Moreover, students who are vaccinated will not need to adhere to the extensive quarantine protocols that have been in place. Through widespread vaccination, we can accelerate the return to a more traditional college experience, including seamless delivery of in-person courses, attending athletic games, more on-campus events and activities, and the resumption of our on-campus visitor and guest policy.

How can students provide proof of vaccination to the university?

Students are required to upload their medical record verifying their COVID-19 vaccination into the Medicat Student Patient Portal. The university will not accept student vaccination records via email.

To upload medical records verifying COVID-19 vaccinations, visit jwu.medicatconnect.com and follow these steps:

  • Enter your JWU log in
  • Once the portal is open, click Upload
  • Select 2019 Novel Coronavirus (Covid 19), NAA (Third Party) from the drop down menu
  • To upload take a photo or screenshot of your vaccination card with your phone, email that to yourself, open your email up on your computer, then you can drag/drop or browse for the file that you would then upload to the portal.

Are students able to request an exemption from the COVID-19 vaccine requirement?

Students may request an exemption from this requirement for medical, religious or other reasons. Students are able to complete the attestation form directly on the Medicat webpage: jwu.medicatconnect.com when they log in. Look for the COVID Vaccine exemption form.

What happens if a student arrives to campus this fall without being vaccinated and without requesting an exemption?

The student would be advised to contact Health Services to request an exemption or schedule a vaccination appointment in Rhode Island, providing proof when they receive their shot(s). Students in this instance would have a temporary hold on their account during the university’s consideration of the exemption request or until proof of compliance is entered into the student’s Medicat account.

Do students who live off-campus and are enrolled in online classes need to be vaccinated to access campus?

Students who live off-campus and are enrolled in online classes are encouraged to get the vaccine to support in-person connections with campus. Students who decide they do not wish to be vaccinated should complete the exemption form.

I am an international student and have been vaccinated in my home country. Am I able to come to campus?

Students traveling from their home country who have received the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine are permitted to live on and visit campus. COVID-19 vaccinations approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) are also sufficient. Students must to upload their vaccine information using the university’s Medicat Student Patient Portal. To do so, visit: jwu.medicatconnect.com

What vaccine options are available to individuals who reside in the United States?

People ages 16-17 are only eligible for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine (two shots).

Ages 18+ are eligible for all vaccine options: the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine (two shots), the Moderna vaccine (two shots) and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine (one shot).

If I am vaccinated, what events and activities am I now able to do?

Guidance can vary from state to state and be modified at any point in time. The university will continue to comply with state guidance. The Centers for Disease Control continues to update its guidance on a weekly basis, advising which activities and practices are encouraged for vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. Learn more.

If I am vaccinated, do I need to wear a mask?

According to the Centers for Disease Control, vaccinated individuals may gather or conduct activities outdoors without wearing a mask, maintaining a three feet distance, except in certain crowded settings and venues. Small, indoor gatherings of vaccinated individuals without masks are also permitted. Learn more.

The university currently requires masks when inside of buildings on campus, and will continue to advise students, faculty and staff of any changes to university policies that may occur as the guidance from government and public health officials evolves.

I am a student who needs assistance in scheduling an appointment for a vaccine. What do I do?

Those who wish to schedule a vaccination appointment can visit VaccineFinder.org or PlanYourVaccine.com to see availability in their state.

Students in need of assistance may also contact their campus’ Health Services office.

Is the university requiring faculty and staff to be vaccinated?

The university continues to strongly advocate for faculty and staff to gain access to COVID vaccines. At this time, vaccination is not a requirement for faculty and staff. We will continue to consult government and public health officials on all health and safety measures needed to resume full campus operations this fall.

If I have my first vaccine dose but will not have my second before classes start in August; will I be allowed to live on campus and attend classes?

Yes. If students are in the process of becoming vaccinated, they should consult JWU Health Services and be sure to upload their electronic medical record verifying their COVID-19 vaccination into the Medicat Student Patient Portal. To do so, visit: jwu.medicatconnect.com

If I am fully vaccinated, will I still have to be tested for COVID-19 this fall?

The university continues to follow the recommendations and protocols put in place by government and health officials. In Providence, the Rhode Island Department of Health asks that students continue to participate in surveillance testing at this time. JWU will continue to update and communicate its practices as guidelines change.

The university continues to encourage its campus community to complete the daily COVID questionnaire on the JWU app; should this change, it will be communicated.

I am a student who is planning to live on campus this fall and will be fully vaccinated; how can I ensure that my roommates also are fully vaccinated?

We encourage students to establish a common understanding regarding how they plan to live together as roommates, including matters related to minimizing the risk of COVID-19 infection within their room.  Should you need help, residential life team members will be available to assist you and your roommate.

Will classrooms, bathrooms, common spaces and other facilities continue to be rigorously cleaned and sanitized this upcoming academic year as they were during the 2020-2021 academic year?

Cleaning and sanitizing measures will continue to be a priority and will be modified based on the most recent federal, state and local guidance. Throughout campus, students, faculty and staff will continue to see hand disinfectant and sanitation wipe stations in high traffic areas and frequently touched surfaces. Classrooms and large common assembly areas will be cleaned on a regular schedule and all common bathrooms will be cleaned frequently.

What will the visitor and guest policy be for the fall?

We hope to allow visitors to campus in accordance with our guest policy and COVID-19 Conduct Protocol. We will continue to seek guidance from government and public health officials and communicate decisions as they are made.

Will there be restrictions on the number of friends and family members who can help me move in on campus this fall?

The guidance from government and public health officials continues to evolve. Instructions and information regarding move-in will be communicated throughout the summer.

Do students who plan to attend orientation over the summer need to be vaccinated?

Students are not required to be vaccinated to attend summer orientation. The university requires all students visiting campus for orientation to provide a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours or proof of full vaccination. Individuals who do not present a negative test result will be asked to take a rapid test onsite.

May students attending orientation this summer request an exemption to the fall vaccination requirements? How? Do I need to bring any paperwork?

Students are not required to be vaccinated to attend summer orientation. If students attending JWU this fall wish to request an exemption to the vaccine requirement due to medical, religious or other concerns, they must complete the exemption form via jwu.medicatconnect.com.

Will I be living in a dorm room with other students during orientation?

All students, including commuters and non-traditional students, stay overnight in our residence halls during the two-day Orientation. Due to health concerns surrounding COVID-19, you will be provided a private room.

Do students attending summer orientation need to use the JWU pre-screening app to come to campus?

Students attending summer orientation will be verbally asked the questions, which will be posted and visible, from the JWU Daily Check In and do not need to use the app for this purpose during summer orientation.

Family or friends may drop students off for summer orientation, will they be allowed on campus?

Visitors with appointments are welcome on campus and will be permitted in campus buildings. Individuals dropping students off for summer orientation are permitted to be outside on campus.

Who should students contact if they are experiencing technology, physical & other challenges?

Students with legitimate and significant technological, physical, or other limitations that could impair their ability to engage in the course, especially during remote delivery, should contact their academic counselor for assistance.

Students experiencing general difficulties using JWU technology (ulearn, jwuLink, ulearn, etc.) should contact the JWU IT for assistance.

Academic Success and Accessibility Services will be available for students who are on-campus as well as studying remotely. Students can access services and contact the office by visiting their respective websites.

What assistance and resources are available to help students succeed while studying remotely?

The Academic Success Center offers tutoring services for a variety of core courses.  Students can connect with peer or professional tutors who are familiar with their course curriculum to enhance their classroom learning. Students can also meet with our professional Academic Success Center staff to review time management strategies, study strategies, note taking skills, or develop academic goals. While classes are offered remotely, Academic Success Center services will be offered remotely via zoom 7 days a week.  Appointments can be made through USucceed or by calling the appointment line at 401.598.1485. Students also have access to Smarthinking, a 24/7 professional tutoring service that allows students to speak with real online educators and access tutorials, writing manuals, sample problems, research tools, study manuals, and more. Smarthinking may be accessed through jwuLink and ulearn.

Students also are encouraged to prepare for remote classes by reading Remote Learning Success Tips. Faculty members will also be available to meet with students via online conferencing tools.

How often do I need to complete the Daily COVID-19 Screening Questionnaire?

Every day you’re on campus! This includes all students, faculty & staff who will be on campus. This includes weekends, non-class days, quick visits – again, each day you are on campus.

What are the expectations for students who need to quarantine?

Students required to quarantine are expected to abide by the directions and follow all guidance that they have received. Quarantining is not optional and is required by state mandates. During this confined period of time, students are encouraged to utilize university virtual services, such as the library, that are available to them, and to stay connected to family and friends through various electronic means. As members of the JWU community, it is up to all to abide by the guidelines that have been put in place to help keep our community and those around us safe. If members of the JWU community become aware of a possible violation of a quarantine or self-isolation, they should follow the appropriate reporting process.

The university developed a COVID Code of Conduct that, like the JWU Student Code of Conduct, applies to all on and off-campus students.
