JWU North Miami Campus COVID-19 Student Confirmed Positive Cases

All JWU students who live on or come to campus are required to conduct daily screening of their symptoms, using an app developed by the university. Based on the response, the student either will be cleared or instructed to notify campus Health Services. Depending on Health Services’ evaluation of the students’ symptoms and other relevant factors, Health Services will determine whether to administer a COVID-19 test is necessary.

The following information is based on student testing coordinated by JWU Health Services:

Important Items to Note for Spring


  1. All students, faculty, and staff must wear their current JWU identification cards. Ideally, on a visible lanyard around the neck.
  2. All JWU identification cards are issued, activated, and managed directly by the Safety & Security office.
  3. Facial masks are required and must be worn on campus at all times.
  4. Additional security posts have been installed both at ASC and UC to provide assistance and guidance.

Counseling Services

Our North Miami campus is offering services via phone or telehealth (video) sessions to students residing anywhere in Florida by appointment only. For students residing outside of Florida, we are offering help with referrals and connection to local providers. Parking & Shuttle Services

  1. Designated parking for students has been secured in the Staff and Faculty Parking Lot, the Arch Creek Parking Lot, and the South Parking Lot.
  2. When leaving a parked vehicle on campus, please ensure all valuables are removed from the vehicle.
  3. Shuttle and Saferide services will be available only during evening hours from 5pm to 10pm. However, Saferides are provided from 10pm to 6am upon request, through Campus Safety & Security at 305- 892-7011.
  4. Please report any suspicious activity or individuals to Campus Safety & Security at (305) 892-7011.


Residential Life

  1. Attention Arch Creek, Emerald Lake and Palm Gardens residents: Flamingo Hall lobby will be open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in order for you to access your respective mailboxes. 

  2. Please continue to follow all local COVID-19 ordinances implemented in the area, which includes Miami-Dade County-Wide curfew from midnight to 6am every day, until canceled or revised. For the latest information, please visit the county’s Municipalities & Curfews website.


COVID-19 Protocols

  1. Staff and students are required to screen themselves for symptoms of COVID-19 on a daily basis. Everyone on campus must wear facial masks at all times.

  2. Both staff and students entering campus property must complete the daily COVID-19 questionnaire via the mobile app, and must present proof of the green check mark upon arrival.

  3. In case the daily COVID-19 mobile app questionnaire yields a red mark:
    • Students must: Notify Faculty and Campus Health Services immediately for assistance.
    • Staff must: Notify immediate supervisor or Department Head.
  1. Faculty and staff are authorized to request from students proof of self-check and green check mark prior to any meeting or scheduled class session.
  1. Students are expected to abide by all federal, state, local, and JWU guidelines and regulations implemented, including the COVID19 Code of Conduct protocol, to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Failure to do so may result in a violation of the Student Code of Conduct and action through the Conduct Review Process.

The implementation of the self-check protocol on the mobile app is part of our universitywide efforts to contain the threat of this highly contagious virus. Once again, thank you for wearing facial coverings, practicing social distancing, and good hygiene. We are all in this together!

What to Expect on the North Miami Campus

The student experience will continue to look different. We continue to monitor federal and state guidance to determine the best way to execute in-person events. This past spring, we successfully offered career fairs and other experiences virtually. Student Academic & Financial Services, Experiential Education & Career Services, Tutoring, Personal Counseling, and other services will be accessible in-person and virtually. Students who typically work on campus should speak with their department heads to determine their status.

University FAQs

What are the plans for the spring 2021 semester?

The realities and implications of COVID-19 continue to inform our decisions regarding the spring semester. Once again, we evaluated different scenarios based on the most current government and public health guidance and projections for 2021.

Based on the information we have today, we have decided to move the first day of class to Tuesday, January 19, 2021. This delayed start will accommodate Providence Campus students arriving from any state to complete a mandatory 14-day quarantine. 

Should circumstances occur over the coming weeks that may affect our decisions regarding the spring semester, we will inform you as quickly as possible.

What is the status of spring break?

Like so many other colleges, we are also cancelling spring break. This will allow us to complete the academic year as planned.

What is the status of Commencement ceremonies in 2021?

The university continues to meet to discuss how to celebrate commencement and will share more details in early 2021

I am an international student. How might plans for the spring semester impact me?

Who are first-year students? Who are first-year transfer students?

First-year students are considered to be new students who have enrolled at JWU and began their studies here this fall or spring. First-year students are welcome to live on campus. This includes the new students who had enrolled at either the North Miami or Denver campuses, and decided to campus transfer to either Providence or Charlotte.

First-year transfer students are students who attended another institution after high school before coming to JWU. First-year transfer students are also welcome to live on campus.

Will I be receiving a reduction in my tuition if I 'm enrolled in remote classes?

JWU’s learning environments and appropriate support services are now available in synchronous and/or asynchronous formats. As a result, the full-time tuition for the spring semester remains the same for all undergraduate students.

What are synchronous and asynchronous classes?

All courses will have components that are synchronous and asynchronous. The synchronous component of a course involves the entire class meeting together with the instructor present. This may happen in a classroom setting, or may happen virtually depending on the course, and whether it is a remote course or an in-person course. These synchronous sessions will be held at the regularly scheduled class time.

The asynchronous portion of the class may involve either viewing material that is available online, doing group work with classmates, or conducting independent work.

Each syllabus will clearly state whether class sessions will be held synchronously or asynchronously.

How are the courses on my schedule being delivered? Remote, online or in-person?

What are the differences between courses that are being delivered remotely, online or in-person?

Remote Delivery:

  • For each week of remote delivery, faculty will schedule a minimum of one synchronous instructional course meeting per week.
  • Synchronous meetings will be scheduled for the same day/s and during the same time period that the course is normally scheduled.
  • Faculty will communicate this information to students prior to the start of class.
  • Synchronous sessions will be used similarly to how course time is used during normal face-to-face instruction by delivering course content and facilitating activities (lectures, discussions, presentations, etc.)
  • All synchronous sessions will be recorded and posted for students in ulearn.

In-person Delivery:

  • Each classroom will have a pre-determined maximum capacity to achieve physical distancing.
  • If the number of students on a roster exceeds 20 or the max capacity for the classroom, faculty will divide the class roster into two groups and assign each group a day of the week for in-person instruction.
  • Faculty will communicate group assignments to students prior to the start of classes, and students must keep to their assigned class group for the duration of the semester.
  • Faculty will engage students with course content on days when they are not attending in person through alternative assignments, pre-recorded lecture, and/or live streaming.

Online Delivery:

  • All course activity is done online.
  • There are no required face-to-face sessions within the course and no requirements for on-campus activity.

Since all of my classes are online, how do I get the textbooks that I need?

Visit the JWU Bookstore website as soon as your schedule is confirmed to begin the process of acquiring necessary course materials. 

Who should students contact if they are experiencing technology, physical & other challenges?

Students with legitimate and significant technological, physical, or other limitations that could impair their ability to engage in the course, especially during remote delivery, should contact their academic counselor for assistance.

Students experiencing general difficulties using JWU technology (ulearn, jwuLink, ulearn, etc.) should contact the JWU IT for assistance.

Academic Success and Accessibility Services will be available for students who are on-campus as well as studying remotely. Students can access services and contact the office by visiting their respective websites.

What assistance and resources are available to help students succeed while studying remotely?

The Academic Success Center offers tutoring services for a variety of core courses.  Students can connect with peer or professional tutors who are familiar with their course curriculum to enhance their classroom learning. Students can also meet with our professional Academic Success Center staff to review time management strategies, study strategies, note taking skills, or develop academic goals. While classes are offered remotely, Academic Success Center services will be offered remotely via zoom 7 days a week.  Appointments can be made through USucceed or by calling the appointment line at 401.598.1485.   Students also have access to Smarthinking, a 24/7 professional tutoring service that allows students to speak with real online educators and access tutorials, writing manuals, sample problems, research tools, study manuals, and more. Smarthinking may be accessed through jwuLink and ulearn.

Students also are encouraged to prepare for remote classes by reading Remote Learning Success Tips. Faculty members will also be available to meet with students via online conferencing tools.  

Will graduate classes be held in-person?

All JWU graduate programs (except, as currently planned, programs in Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies, Occupational Therapy Doctorate, and Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership) will be fully remote.

What are the expectations for students who need to quarantine?

Students required to quarantine are expected to abide by the directions and follow all guidance that they have received. Quarantining is not optional and is required by state mandates. During this confined period of time, students are encouraged to utilize university virtual services, such as the library, that are available to them, and to stay connected to family and friends through various electronic means. As members of the JWU community, it is up to all to abide by the guidelines that have been put in place to help keep our community and those around us safe. If members of the JWU community become aware of a possible violation of a quarantine or self-isolation, they should follow the appropriate reporting process.

Which students will be permitted to live on-campus?
  • We will welcome the following students to campus for the spring:
  • New students, regardless of major
  • Returning first-year students who began classes this fall
  • Students with classes that require a laboratory component
  • Students on local internships
  • Seniors who wish to come to campus
Will students who live off campus be permitted to access campus?

Students who live off campus are welcome to come to campus to use facilities, including the library, computer labs, and fitness centers (subject to local and state guidelines). Student Academic & Financial Services, Experiential Education & Career Services, Tutoring, Personal Counseling, and other services will be accessible in-person and virtually.

Will JWU participate in athletic sports this academic year?

To best prioritize and protect the health and wellbeing of the student-athletes who will be attending classes in person, as well as the JWU and surrounding communities, the fall and winter sports seasons at the Providence and Charlotte campuses have been cancelled. JWU North Miami and Denver campuses have discontinued all sports seasons and competitions. Student athletes will be hearing from their coaches who will discuss these decisions in more detail and offer guidance. A determination on the status of spring sports has not yet been made, but it will be based on federal and state health and safety guidelines.

How often do I need to complete the Daily COVID-19 Screening Questionnaire?

Every day you’re on campus! This includes all students, faculty & staff who will be on campus. This includes weekends, non-class days, quick visits – again, each day you are on campus.

How does the university clean and sanitize its campuses?

The cleaning and sanitizing measures we have put into place when the pandemic beagan will continue into the spring and will be modified based on the most recent federal, state and local guidance. Throughout campus, students, faculty and staff will see hand disinfectant and sanitation wipe stations at elevator lobbies on each floor, main entrance hallways, computer labs, libraries, and service desks. Classrooms and large common assembly areas will be cleaned on a regular schedule; special attention will be given to high-touch surfaces such as handrails and doorknobs. All common bathrooms will be cleaned frequently.

Are there new guidelines on- and off-campus students will need to follow as a result of COVID-19?

This summer, the university developed a COVID Code of Conduct that, like the JWU Student Code of Conduct, applies to all on and off-campus students. ]The university will continue to share most up-to-date information regarding COVID-19 screening, testing, contact tracing, face coverings, and social distancing protocols.

What should we all be doing to promote our health

JWU Health Services suggests following the below guidelines.

External checklist:

  • Wash hands often.
  • Utilize face coverings/masks.
  • Keep a physical distance of 6 feet.
  • Follow cough/sneeze etiquette.
  • Stay home when sick.

Internal checklist:

  • Sleep six to eight hours per night.
  • Exercise daily.
  • Eat a balanced diet of lean proteins, whole grains and fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Keep stress levels low by doing something you enjoy every day, such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, going outside for walks, etc.
  • Consider taking supplements like a multivitamin, Echinacea, probiotic, Vitamins A, C, and E.
  • Get vaccinated for the flu when available.
